Selecting My Best-Fit Major & School of Law

Your goal should be to find a law program that embraces your values, will provide a positive learning environment, and prepare you to practice law to the best of your abilities. Investigate as many programs as possible, make contacts with their admissions officers, faculty, and even alumni to get an understanding of the school beyond what their web sites tell you. You want a satisfactory law school experience, and this starts with you taking charge of this process.

Law studies can encompass a wide range of specialty areas. A specialization in a legal field is not required before applying to a law school, however, if you are sure of the type of law you want to practice, find a school  with a concentration or clinic in that area. The fields of law we have identified is comprehensive, but is by no means a complete listing of all legal specialties. We want you to consider the possibilities as you investigate legal studies. Regardless of your academic classification, with your current undergraduate major, you can find a legal specialization to best utilize your interest.

We have compiled more than 60 possible specialty areas for you to consider. The listings include direct links to law schools that offer the specialty listed. You may follow a link to joint degree programs which include both a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Masters Degree. Pursuit of these options may require an additional year beyond the traditional three year J.D. curriculum. An academic program or clinical program involves study during the second and third year. There are also internships or externships allowing for law practice under the supervision of law professors or practicing attorneys. If you find the link does not correspond to the program or is no longer functional, please advise our staff so we can correct the issue.

Under each of the headings on the right you will find a description of the specialty area, Texas Tech University majors and specializations that support a post-graduate education in the law specialty, and law schools with an emphasis in the particular area.
