Getting involved in the Community
Why should you give back to your Community?
- Helping your community is helping yourself.
- When you decide to apply for law school, having experience within the community is one of the most important details to include in your resume.
- The legal profession is based off the idea of helping out in the community and helping people personally. What better way to get started on your career path than by actually getting involved now.
No matter how you choose to give back to the community, giving back is what matters. Just remember, giving back to your community will help you on the road to law school.
The Texas Tech Prelaw Program has opportunities for you to get involved!
Habitat for Humanity
- Each semester the Texas Tech Prelaw Program offers a chance for you to get involved with Habitat for Humanity.
- Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. They work with people in need regardless of race or religion.
- Visiting their web site will provide much further information into how and why Habitat for Humanity was created.

- The Texas Tech Prelaw Program has volunteered alongside Habitat for Humanity three times so far.
- The Prelaw Team assists Habitat for Humanity in building affordable housing for needy families.
Our involvement includes:
- Working alongside the homeowner (partner) families we help build and rehabilitate simple, decent houses.
- We help in constructing the frame of the house, insulation, roofing, siding, and painting
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)
- Beginning in the Spring of 2009, the Prelaw Program began a close partnership with CASA to provide them with volunteers and assistance in their mission to help children.
- While many of the Prelaw Team's community service events are scheduled by semester, the team plans for this partnership with CASA to remain a regular component of Prelaw community service.
- CASA volunteers work alongside attorneys and social workers as appointed officers of the court.
- There are other volunteer opportunities with CASA outside of direct advocacy with children. One such event is an annual fundraising Dodge Ball tournament.
- CASA of the South Plains currently has 221 children in need of a CASA volunteer.
